Geboren und aufgewachsen in der kleinen ländlichen Gemeinde Eden Crossing, Minnesota, ist er der einzige Sohn einer hart arbeitenden, aber in Geldnöten steckenden Familie, die eine Milchwirtschaft betreibt. Jacob nutzt sein Können im Hockey, um seinen Abschluss in Agrarwissenschaften zu finanzieren.
