Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Sociology - Media, Art, Music, grade: 18 out of 20, University of Minho (Instituto de Ciências Sociais), course: Sociology, language: Portugues, abstract: Com a criação da rádio no final do século XIX, deu-se início à era da comunicação de massas. Através das ondas da rádio foi possível, pela primeira vez, fazer chegar uma mensagem a um grande número de pessoas. Não por acaso "os primeiros estudos sociológicos, psicológicos e filosóficos sobre os meios de comunicação de massa foram feitos quando se deu a expansão das ondas de rádio. Mais do que o telefone, o telégrafo sem fio e o fonógrafo, o rádio despertou interesse, porque com ele iniciou-se efetivamente a informação e a comunicação de massa à distância." (Chaui, 2005) A partir dos anos 30, a rádio começou a ser encarada como um veículo de transmissão propagandística do capitalismo. Thomas Adorno e Max Horkheimer, na obra Dialética do Iluminismo (1947), sugerem que "as organizações mantenedoras dos grandes meios de comunicação social são, fundamentalmente, capitalistas, portanto visam - acima de tudo - o lucro financeiro, deixando de lado a idéia original de democratização da cultura, passando, assim, à venda e distribuição da mesma em larga escala na malha populacional." (Adorno, 1999). Partilhando esta visão, Jerry Mander afirma que a televisão, tal como a rádio, não pode ser considerada um meio de comunicação democrático, devido ao seu carácter económico e tecnológico. Embora as abordagens críticas sejam relevantes, preferimos ter em conta igualmente uma perspectiva interaccionista estudando as configurações adoptadas pelas diversas organizações nomeadamente em contexto de crise, como é o caso do surgimento das rádios livres.
