About the Book

Born to a struggling working class family, Ray Summers grows closer than a brother to his lifelong chum, Josh Jarmon. At college Ray becomes absorbed in the antiwar movement and bridles at his new I-A status while Josh is offered a posting as a chemist and a deferment. With his degree in hand, Josh heads from Virginia to California with pregnant and beautiful Megan, who is Ray's sister. As peaceful student protests voice legitimate objections to the Vietnam War, an ominous cabal co-opts the Students for a Democratic Society, the key college movement. It plots nothing less than the conversion of America to a communist state. The two old pals and their families must confront unimagined and unspeakable calamity while the country is ripped apart around them.
About the Author: Reiss' first two novels (The Gemini Conspiracy and River of Scorpions) are rightly thrillers but share little with today's genre of mindless shoot-'em-ups. In developing his characters, Reiss combines psychological depth together with a vivid and emotional sense of relationships, locale and culture. Subthemes explore the underlying causes of the insidious mischief his imperfect heroes must confront, adding intensity and color to his works.

Sacred Pledge is the deeply personal saga of two families and intimate friends who become snarled in the grip of horrendous strife and personal tragedy as they struggle to literally survive the decade of the 1960s. The author is intimately familiar with the locales, the events and the birth of the New Left with its rapid metamorphosis from peaceful campus debates and protest marches into murderous bombings, open sedition and rebellion. Nearing its peak, the Weather Underground Organization's open revelation of its mission to destroy the American way of life in favor of global communism resulted in massive violence. Ensnarled within that reality, Ray, Josh, Megan and Megan's dearest friend Pricilla and their families must also confront the darkest of personal demons lurking within the tangled web of the Sacred Pledge.

Dr. Reiss resides with his wife, Karen, in Wilmington, North Carolina. His son Cory is an attorney in Wilmington, NC, while Victoria, also an attorney, practices in Washington, DC.
