Sie hat Cap-Matifou und Deux-Moulins vorgeschoben, als strecke sie dem Gast ihre weißen Arme entgegen. Sie ist so strahlend weiß, diese Stadt, daß wir geblendet blinzeln müssen. Aber dafür sind der Hafen, der Kai um so bunter an Farben. - Da sind die Mäste und Kamine von Tausenden von Schiffen, Südamerikadampfer, Holland-Indien- Dampfer, Millionärsjachten, Fischerboote, Segelboote, da sind Tausende von klatschenden Wimpeln und flatternden Flaggen. Sirenen brüllen dumpf wie Stiere, Lotsensprachrohre dröhnen, Krane knirschen, Ketten rasseln. Und droben am Kai drängen sich sommerlich bunte Frauen. Lastträger mit rotem Fez und gelben Turbantuchfetzen geben Farbflecken, weiße Tücher winken Willkomm, Kinderstimmen jauchzen, arabische Händler breiten tschechische Bettvorleger aus, um sie dem Fremden - sowie er nur den Fuß an Land setzt - als Sudanteppiche zu verkaufen. Und Palmen, von denen der Nordländer träumt, und Bougainvilleen, die ihre Blüten wie ausgehängten Bischofspurpur um alles Gemäuer ranken. Und weißbeburnuste Araber, so stolz wandelnd, als kämen sie geradewegs aus Tausendundeiner Nacht, und weißverhüllte Araberinnen mit rätseldunklen Augen über
