Servie par la plume d'un écrivain de génie - il a, avec ses célèbres Confessions, inventé l'autobiographie-, elle nourrira la pensée du Moyen Âge, accompagnera à la Renaissance la redécouverte de l'héritage antique et alimente aujourd'hui encore la réflexion des philosophes et des théologiens (le corpus de cette oeuvre semble d'ailleurs n'être jamais clos, et l'ensemble de lettres inconnues et de sermons inédits que l'on vient de retrouver éclaire d'un jour nouveau la figure du "docteur de la grâce").Cette biographie restitue Augustin dans tote sa complexité et toute sa profondeur, aussi bien lorsqu'elle fait le portrait d'un homme hors du commun que lorsqu'elle dégage son apport majeur à l'histoire intellectuelle et à la consolidation du christianisme latin.Ancien membre de l'Ecole française de Rome, professeur émérite à l'université de Grenoble, spécialiste de l'Afrique du Nord dans l'antiquité (il a publié chez Fayard une grande synthèse sur Carthage ainsi qu'une biographie d'Hannibal), Serge Lancel a partagé sa vie de chercheur entre l'archéologie des premiers temps de Carthage et l'étude historique de l'Eglise d'Afrique. Membre du comité de rédaction de l'Augustinus-Lexikon, il a aussi collaboré à l'édition des nouvelles lettres dans un volume de la "Bibliothèque augustinienne" et a publié les Actes de la "conférence de Carthage" de 411. "
