Gustave Flaubert est un écrivain français né à Rouen le 12 décembre 1821[1] et mort à Croisset, lieu-dit de la commune de Canteleu, le 8 mai 1880. Prosateur de premier plan de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, Gustave Flaubert a marqué la littérature française par la profondeur de ses analyses psychologiques, son souci de réalisme, son regard lucide sur les comportements des individus et de la société, et par la force de son style dans de grands romans comme Madame Bovary (1857), Salammbô (1862), L'Éducation sentimentale (1869), ou le recueil de nouvelles Trois contes (1877). Salammbô est un roman historique de Gustave Flaubert, paru le 24 novembre 1862 chez Michel Lévy frères. Il prend pour sujet la guerre des Mercenaires, IIIe siècle av. J.-C., qui opposa la ville de Carthage aux mercenaires barbares qu'elle avait employés pendant la première guerre punique, et qui se révoltèrent, furieux de ne pas avoir reçu la solde convenue. Flaubert chercha à respecter l'histoire connue, mais profita du peu d'informations disponibles pour décrire un Orient à l'exotisme sensuel et violent. À l'instar de son oeuvre, les travaux de recherche et d'élaboration déployés pour l'écriture de Salammbô sont considérables. En effet, en avril 1858, Flaubert se rend en Tunisie afin de voir Carthage, de s'y renseigner, et de lui permettre de rendre avec justesse son ressenti sur les lieux où se déroule son récit. Résumé Salammbô est une oeuvre de Gustave Flaubert et plus précisément un genre assez rare qui est le roman historique, mélange d'études historiques et de roman, une sorte d'Histoire romancée par l'auteur. Cette OEuvre fut publiée en 1862 aux éditions Michel Lévy. Le roman prend pour intrigue un sujet historique, qui est la Guerre des Mercenaires qui s'est produite au IIIe siècle av. J.-C, qui est fut guerre opposant la ville de Carthage aux Mercenaires barbares qu'elle avait employés pendant la première Guerre punique, qui se sont retournés contre la ville ensuite: en effet ces mercenaires se sont révoltés contre la ville car il étaient simplement furieux de ne pas avoir reçu la solde convenue et de ne pas avoir été payés pour les efforts et leurs sacrifices. Flaubert chercha donc à romancer cette partie de l'Histoire, afin de dégager des personnages, mais aussi à respecter l'Histoire connue et les livres dans lesquels il s'était documenté préalablement durant cinq années. En parallèle, il se permit de développer une vision, celle d' un Orient idéal, imaginé comme exotique, sensuel et envoûtant, mais aussi violent et accablant de par sa chaleur. L'histoire débute en prenant pour point de départ temporel la fin de la guerre punique. L'épisode du festin présente les personnages, et situe le contexte: c'est à Carthage, et un festin est donné pour remercier et mette à l'honneur les mercenaires d'avoir défendu la ville. Le festin se déroule au sein des jardins d'Hamilcar qui n'est autre que le général. Lors de ce festin, Mâtho et Narr'havas, les deux chefs des mercenaires, tombent amoureux de Salammbô, la fille du général Hamilcar et cela...
