Das Institut für Mittelstandsforschung definiert den Beitrag dieser Unternehmenskategorie auf 60,1 % der gesamten Nettowertschöpfung in Deutschland. Hinzu kommt, dass 99,3 % aller Unternehmen in Deutschland dieser Kategorie zugeordnet werden. Die Global Travel 24 fokussiert sich auf mittelständische Unternehmen, welche nach der Definition der EU-Kommission ein Unternehmen ist, das kein Kleinst-, Klein- oder Großunternehmen. Die Kategorisierung erfolgt durch eine Kombination aus der Anzahl der Mitarbeiter und dem Jahresumsatz. Demnach handelt es sich um ein mittelständisches Unternehmen, wenn die Beschäftigtenzahl zwischen 50 und 249 Mitarbeiter ist sowie ein Jahresumsatz zwischen 10 Millionen Euro und 50 Millionen Euro vorliegt. Die Tourismusbranche befindet sich aufgrund der Corona-Pandemie in einer herausfordernden Zeit. Im Jahr 2021 ist eine minimale Erholung im Verhältnis zum ersten Pandemiejahr erkennbar, dennoch wird der Umsatzverlust im Vergleich zurzeit vor der Pandemie auf 58,9 Milliarden Euro hochgerechnet. Davon besonders stark betroffen sind Geschäftsreisen. Die Anzahl und die Ausgaben sind um 64 % gesunken. Um diesem Trend entgegenzuwirken und bei einem geringen Nachfragevolumen Kunden zu generieren, strebt die Global Travel 24 eine umfassende Social Media Kampagne an. Zu Beginn der Fallstudie wird Social Media in der Tourismusbranche in den Mittelpunkt gesetzt. Zunächst werden daher Social Media Aktivitäten dargestellt und deren Nutzen ermittelt sowie eine Betrachtung der Wettbewerber in der Branche vorgenommen. Darauf aufbauend lassen sich die Tätigkeiten der Konkurrenz analysieren. Aus den gewonnenen Daten wird nun definiert, welche Elemente für Global Travel 24 besonders relevant
