Ce livre raconte d'une manière romancée la vie de Yasuke, le premier samouraï étranger. Il était originaire du Mozambique. Il a été capturé par des marchands d'esclave portugais qui l'emmenèrent à Goa, en Inde, afin d'y être vendu comme esclave. Il sera acheté par des jésuites qui se serviront de lui afin de puiser de l'eau pour leur mission installé dans ce pays. C'est dans ce pays, qu'il fit la connaissance du prêtre Alessandro Valignano qui le pris avec lui afin qu'il assure sa protection. Il avait un physique impressionnant et il mesurait près de deux mètres. En 1577, ils s'embarquèrent tous les deux pour un voyage, durant lequel ils firent escales en Malaisie, et en Chine, avant d'arriver au Japon le 25 juillet 1579. En 1581, ils se rendirent à Kyōto, où règne le puissant seigneur Oda Nobunaga qui sera fasciné par la couleur, l'intelligence et la force de Yasuke ainsi que par sa facilité à apprendre les langues étrangères. Lorsque plus tard, il apprit que Valignano s'apprêtait à quitter le Japon, il lui demanda de laisser Yasuke avec lui, ce que le prêtre accepta. Nobunaga se prit d'affection pour lui et une grande amitié naquit entre les deux hommes. Il avait une grande confiance en lui, au point de faire de lui le premier samouraï étranger et de lui accorder comme épouse sa fille adoptive. Il lui donna également le nom de Yasuke, qui était une japonisation de son nom. Yasuke deviendra son garde du corps, ainsi que son porteur d'armes, ce qui était un immense honneur. Mais Yasuke ne sera samouraï que durant une année, car en 1582, Nobunaga est trahi par Akechi Mitsuhide l'un de ses vassaux. Cet homme fera également mourir son héritier Nobutada. Selon les principes du code d'honneur des samouraïs, Nobunaga et son fils se firent seppuku après la défaite de leur armée. Car un samouraï préfère la mort au déshonneur. Yasuke ne se fit pas seppuku, car cela était contraire à ses valeurs chrétiennes. Il sera fait prisonnier par Mitsuhide qui ne le tua pas, car il le considérait comme étant un animal. Pour Mitsuhide, Yasuke n'était pas un samouraï, car il ne comprenait rien à leur culture, notamment au seppuku et il ne méritait qu'il se rabaisse en le tuant. Il ordonna que Yasuke soit remis aux jésuites à Goa en Inde. Par la suite, personne ne sut ce qu'il est advenu de lui après ces événements. Oda Nobunaga est un personnage central de l'histoire du Japon, car il est l'un des trois seigneurs ayant amené à l'unification du Japon, un pays qui fut longtemps divisé par des multiples guerres opposants des clans contrôlant différentes provinces indépendantes du pouvoir central de l'empereur dont l'autorité sur le Japon ne dépassait pas les murs de son palais impérial.
