Hispania, año 39 antes de nuestra era. En Gades Urso, el esclavo de un tribuno de caballería de la Legión XXX, pasea por el puerto de la ciudad. Por casualidad se topa con una recua de esclavos que están siendo preparados para embarcar. En una jaula Urso descubre a una esclava moribunda. Convence a duras penas a su amo el tribuno, Marco Galerio Celer, para que la compre. Galerio consiente y regresan a Hispalis y a su casa. La mujer recupera poco a poco la salud, pero no recuerda quién es, ni de donde procede, no conoce apenas la lengua que hablan en la casa.
Tras un accidente fortuito se descubre que la esclava presenta unas dotes increíbles para curar enfermedades y tratar heridas. Su fama como sanadora no tarda en ser conocida en la ciudad.
De forma paralela, a Hispania acaba de arribar el flamante Gobernador Cneo Domicio Calvino, que enviado por Octaviano viene a ocuparse de la provincia. El cuestor de la provincia, Marcelo, reniega de este nombramiento, por lo que teje una enrevesada madeja de conspiraciones y espionaje, dirigida a acabar con el gobernador para hacerse con su puesto La esclava, por su parte, poco a poco va recuperando la memoria aunque su identidad aún permanece borrosa. Su certeza de que se trata de una mujer libre le impulsa a enfrentarse a su propio amo, Galerio, que irritado por su descaro y desobediencia, la castiga y reprende con frecuencia cuando ella decide ayudar a otros esclavos con sus dolencias y sus enfermedades. Sin contar a los otros dos esclavos de la casa, todos parecen estar contra ella excepto Cayo Ulpio, amigo personal de Marco Galerio y tribuno de infantería de la misma legión que él. La testaruda desobediencia de la esclava hace que sea castigada con su adscripción a la valetudinaria de la XXX legión dada su excepcional capacidad para curar y sanar, con lo que debe salir en campaña con las tropas cuando éstas parten hacia Gades para hacer frente al ataque del rey mauritano.
Fascinante historia en la que se entremezcla de forma magistral los hechos históricos con la trama novelesca. La documentación de esta novela ha sido exhaustiva, de tal forma que en su lectura podemos sumergirnos en una ambientación muy elaborada de la Hispalis del siglo I a.C., la cultura, la sociedad y las costumbres de Roma en sus provincias.
