    Sem negar a sua paixão pelo mar, barcos de madeira e velejar, Luís Peazê constrói dois personagens, embora muito diferentes, interligados e tão simplórios quanto inspiradores, independentemente dos ambientes em que vivenciam suas experiências...

    Uma peculiaridade em "Santiago e o Mar" são os riscos que o autor impõe a si mesmo, vencendo os limites da narrativa livre, intransigente com a formalidade gramatical dado o perfil das personagens. Outras matérias-primas para Santiago e o Mar foram naturalmente extraídas - energia no fio condutor - do contato profundo com a obra e vida de Ernest Hemingway, de quem Peazê traduziu "Por Quem os Sinos Dobram". Para além disso, o autor produziu uma versão exclusiva do Prêmio Pulitzer (1953) e Nobel de Literatura (1954) "The Old Man and the Sea" (última obra de Hemingway) com ilustrações de Gustave Doré, para presentear aos roteiristas do filme "Hemingway & Fuentes" (em produção) Hilary Hemingway (sobrinha de EH) e o ator e diretor Andy Garcia, para os quais Peazê colaborou com informações para a produção do barco que "O Velho" utiliza no filme.

    Essas experiências não teriam sido possíveis, entretanto, e não teriam impregnado "Santiago e o Mar" com realismos e detalhes tão ricos, se não fosse a aventura que o autor e sua esposa empreenderam juntos, de construirem com as próprias mãos um veleiro de madeira com 10 metros, na Austrália, sem quaisquer conhecimentos e práticas anteriores de construção naval, e velejado nos mares da Tasmânia, Corais, Carpentaria, Arafura e Timor, sem nunca terem velejado antes, movidos pelo sonho de viver num veleiro. Subsequentemente Peazê construiu, e continua estimulado a construir, vários exemplares do clássico Herreshoff 11-1/2 pés, Columbia, considerado obra-prima da arquitetura naval que passou a influenciar a construção de barcos à vela até hoje. Uma das réplicas construídas foi exibida no Wooden Boat Festival de Port Townsend, USA, onde Luís Peazê foi nomeado Cônsul Brasileiro da Wooden Boat Foundation & Northwest Maritime Center. Único brasileiro a participar daquele emblemático evento náutico, considerado o Woodstock dos barcos de madeira.

    Mas a força motora definitiva para empreender uma novela tão curtinha quanto impressionantemente densa é mesmo a relação do autor com o "livro" enquanto objeto, "arquétipo repositório do conhecimento humano que pode passar de mão em mão de um modo singular e insuperável" - é assim que Peazê prefere descrever o que é para ele "o livro", quando perguntado como é a sua relação com os livros. - Bibliófilo e "rato de sebos" confesso, assim como viajante, viveu nos Estados Unidos, Austrália, Brasil onde nasceu (Rio Grande Sul) e, no momento desta publicação, em Portugal.

    É pois com tal paixão incontida que Luís Peazê criou, primeiro em inglês (2016) "Santiago and the Sea" e traduz ele mesmo "Santiago e o Mar" (2023).
