About the Book

La vie de Sara Labelle, ma grand-mère maternelle, est au centre de cette histoire de famille, qui a pour toile de fond les années de fondation de certains villages des Laurentides, dont Brébeuf, Labelle, Saint-Rémi d'Amherst et Sainte-Anne-du-Lac. On y rencontre les familles Labelle, Piché, Marier et Chalifoux. Le parcours de mon grand-père Ambroise Chalifoux ne manque pas d'originalité j'ai découvert en faisant mes recherches qu'il était métis, autodidacte et qu'il avait fait de la prison. Il est décédé le 25 janvier 1918 sur le lot de colonisation où Sara et lui venaient de s'établir à Sainte-Anne-du-Lac. Il devenait ainsi, à 40 ans, le premier mort de la paroisse. La veuve Chalifoux, comme on appellerait ma grand-mère à Sainte-Anne jusqu'à la fin de ses jours, décida de continuer le défrichage de leur lot aidée des plus vieux de leurs cinq enfants, qui avaient entre un an et 13 ans. Une entreprise colossale - Toujours, elle travaillait! En 1935, elle laisse la ferme à l'aîné qui se marie et elle achète un petit magasin au village, où les deux plus jeunes travaillent avec elle. En 1951, elle perd son unique fille, ma mère Cécile, morte après la naissance de son cinquième enfant. Mémére Chalifoux sera présente tant qu'elle le pourra dans nos vies d'orphelins. J'ai vécu auprès d'elle pendant une grande partie de mon enfance et de mon adolescence. Mon récit repose sur toute une documentation généalogique et historique, des entrevues, quelques documents de famille et sur nos propres souvenirs. Il est illustré de beaucoup de vieilles photos. J'y raconte aussi les années d'enfance et d'adolescence que j'ai passées avec Sara, une relation qui a connu des épisodes tendus. Un devoir de mémoire envers les pionnières et les pionniers des Laurentides et la reconnaissance d'une petite-fille ont inspiré ce travail que j'ai entrepris en 2016, année du centenaire de Sainte-Anne-du-Lac, mon village natal.Le livre se divise en trois parties:1888-1915: Les origines/Brébeuf, Labelle, Saint-Rémi d'Amherst1915-1945: Le nouveau pays /Sainte-Anne-du-Lac1945-1962: Grand-maman/Sainte-Anne, Mont-Laurier, ChomedeyUn savoureux document de mon frère aîné Claude le complète: T'en rappelles-tu?... Il l'avait écrit pour la famille et a bien voulu me laisser le publier.
