Henricus - Edition Deutsche Klassik GmbH Über den Autor: 1788 in London als Sohn eines Kapitäns geboren, verbringt George Gordon Noel Byron nach dem frühen Tod des Vaters seine Kindheit mit seiner schottischen Mutter in Aberdeen. Nach dem Tod seines Großonkels erbt er im Alter von zehn Jahren den Adelstitel Baron Byron of Rochdale in the County Palatine of Lancaster, mit Erreichen der Volljährigkeit nimmt er 1808 den mit dem Titel verbundenen Sitz im House of Lords ein. Im Trinity College verliebt sich Lord Byron in den 15-jährigen Chorknaben John Edleston, dessen früher Tod ihn schwer trifft und in langwährende Apathie versetzt. 1812 wird er mit Erscheinen der ersten Canti von Childe Harold's Pilgrimage über Nacht berühmt und sein offen gelebtes Verhältnis zu der verheirateten Lady Caroline Lamb löst einen Skandal aus, der seinen Ruf nachhaltig belastet. In dieser Zeit unterhält er ebenfalls ein Verhältnis mit seiner - verheirateten - Halbschwester Augusta, die 1814 seine Tochter Elizabeth Medora zur Welt bringt. Um den befürchteten gesellschaftlichen Konsequenzen vorzubeugen, heiratet er eilig Annabella Milbanke. Als die Ehe kurz darauf wieder geschieden wird, veranlasst ihn der öffentliche Eklat, England zu verlassen.
