About the Book

Joshua Reeves wants to become a professional trials rider, but his parents want him to go to University and get a degree. He finds a way to combine both things when he is invited to join the trials development squad in Palmerston North. He decides to enrol at Massey and train to be an accountant, so he can ride with the squad. He is saving for a new trials bike, an Ossa TR280i. Everything is on track, he's getting the coaching he needs, he'll have the bike in time for the Nationals in October and his father has offered to pay all the expenses to get him there if he finishes in the top three at the Regionals.Josh's friend Eli and his mates are in the development squad too so Josh teams up with them. One night they cruise the pubs, get drunk, steal gnomes and end up back at the barn they use as a base. The following Saturday night they steal goats and then decide to turn the stealing into a game, a scavenger hunt.Josh is also friendly with Sam, a girl who rides trials too. They've been friends for years. Sam is also going to massey university and it training to be a vet.The trials season starts and for the first few months everything goes well. Josh, Eli and the others spend most of their weekends at competitions riding, on Saturday nights they play the scavenger hunt game, and on Wednesday evenings they all train with the squad. By the end of the first semester Josh is coming fourth overall in the Regionals.Simon is Josh's main rival when they are riding. The rivalry between Josh and Simon escalates and when Josh goes out with Simon's future girlfriend, Libby. Simon gets a bit of revenge, he sees Josh bend the rules at the Regionals and lodges an official complaint, accusing Josh of cheating. There is an enquiry and Josh almost gets thrown out of the Champs. Added to that after the midyear holidays Simon turns up riding a new Ossa TR280i, the motorbike Josh has been saving for. Josh is angry so when stereos come up in the scavenger hunt, he talks Luke into stealing the stereos from Simon's parent's house and keeps going out with Libby just to annoy Simon. The items they are stealing are getting bigger. Kennedy and Bailey, the two police officers investigating the thefts realise it has to be a game. When the lights off the top of the incident car get stolen, their desire to catch the thieves gets personal. They get closer and closer to catching Josh and his mates.Josh crashes and wrecks his bike, he can't afford a new one yet and if he doesn't place in the Regionals his father won't fund him riding in the Nationals. Added to this, he decides it is Sam he likes, not Libby and he tries to talk Sam into going out with him. But she points out he already has a girlfriend and refuses to have anything to go with him. Not much is going right. Then Simon crashes and breaks his leg and Josh comes up with a way of solving his problems. Josh offers to drop Libby and point her in Simon's direction if Simon will lend him his trials bike for the next round of the Regionals. It works and Josh manages to claw his way back up the placings so he can go to the Nationals. But Sam realises what he has done and still refuses to go out with him.The scavenger hunt is nearly over. The boys decide once the game is finished they will get rid of everything they have stolen in a way it can't be traced back to them.Josh decides to take the things he has stolen from Sam's flatmates back. Sam discovers him while he is doing it. He tells her about the scavenger hunt. On the last night of the game, Josh and Luke are seen and chased by the police after taking street signs. They get away but there are so many police cars out looking for them they can't risk using their utes to move and dump the stuff they have stolen. In Josh Reeve's world two things are important now, riding trials and not getting arrested. He comes up with a risky plan to get rid of everything without getting caught and it almost works.
