Der Leipziger Student Christian Reuter, der im Jahre 1696 Schelmuffskys wahrhaftige, curiöse und sehr gefährliche Reisebeschreibung zu Wasser und Lande anonym erscheinen ließ, ist als der Verfasser eines der lustigsten Bücher unserer Literatur, das die Aufschneidereien des weltberühmten Freiherrn von Münchhausen noch übertrumpft, erst vor wenigen Jahrzehnten aus der selbstgewählten Verborgenheit an das Licht gezogen worden. Von seinem L e b e n wissen wir, abgesehen von seinen tollen Studentenjahren, über die uns die umständlichen Disziplinarakten eines hochlöblichen akademischen Senats Auskunft geben, herzlich wenig; aber gerade die Leipziger Jahre Reuters, der, 1665 als Sohn eines Bauern in der Nähe von Zörbig bei Halle geboren, 1694 die Universität bezog, sind mit der Entstehung des Schelmuffsky auf das engste verknüpft und bieten auch sonst ein interessantes Bild von dem akademischen Leben jener Tage. Christian Reuter, den wir uns als einen frischen, übermütigen Burschen, dem ein gehöriger Schalk im Nacken saß, denken müssen, wohnte als Student in dem Hause Zum roten Löwen auf dem Brühl bei einer gewissen Frau Müller, die verwitwet war und eine Reihe erwachsener Kinder, drei Söhne und zwei Töchter, hatte. DieF a m i l i e M ü l l e r, dummstolz und hoffärtig, scheint wegen ihrer ungebildeten, stereotypen Redensarten in studentischen Kreisen ein beliebtes Ziel des Spottes gebildet zu haben; der älteste Sohn Eustachius, das Urbild des Schelmuffsky, war ein Aufschneider und Tagedieb und nach einer gemäß der Sitte junger Edelleute angeblich von ihm unternommenen Auslandreise in das mütterliche Haus zurückgekehrt, wo er sich nicht wenig aufspielte und durch einen liederlichen Lebenswandel die Wirtschaft herunterbrachte. Es dauerte nicht lange, so geriet Reuter, wohl wegen rückständiger Miete, mit seinen Wirtsleuten in Streit und mußte, nachdem ihm, wie es scheint, übel mitgespielt worden war, das Haus verlassen.
