Einst war er zu einem Meister gekommen, der arg geizig war und ihn hart zum Schaffen anhielt, an Tadel nicht sparte, dafür am Brotkasten den Deckel schloß, wenn das Sattwerden anfangen wollte. stand in der Werkstatt und hobelte. Die Sonne schien warm, die Vögel sangen, und der Geselle meinte, sie riefen ihn hinaus auf die Landstraße, wo an den Bäumen die Kirschen reiften. Sagte der Meister: Gesell, die Bank muß fertig werden. Recht so, antwortete Schlupps, der wieder den Kopf voller Streiche hatte. Sagt mir, wieviel Beine eine Bank hat. Sollte man nicht meinen, er wäre bei einem Schuster in der Lehre gewesen und hätte nur einen Dreibein kennen gelernt! rief der Meister erbost. Auch gut, dachte Schlupps, also ein Dreibein soll es werden. Eil dich, sagte der Meister, wenn ich wiederkomme, mußt du fertig sein, damit ging er fort auf das Grafenschloß. Schlupps aber, der die Augen überall hatte, wo es was zu erspähen gab, bemerkte wohl, daß der Meister unter der Schürze etwas forttrug, das er heimlich gearbeitet, damit es sein Geselle nicht sähe, und scharfen Blicks erkannte er, daß es ein hölzerner Fuß war, den der Meister mit Katzengold eingerieben, bis er glänzte. Dahinter steckt etwas, dachte er, begann in des Herrn Abwesenheit alles zu untersuchen, Schubladen, Kasten und Truhen und entdeckte in einer Lade, die unter des Meisters Bett stand, einen Fuß aus purem Golde, der gerade so aussah, wie der, den der Schreiner gemacht. Mit dem Goldfuß hatte es aber eine eigne Bewandtnis. Der Meister war auf dem Schloß gewesen, um in der Kammer des Grafen etwas in Ordnung zu bringen. Er mußte oft wiederkommen und hatte Muße, wenn der Herr Graf das Zimmer verließ, alles darin genau zu betrachten. Besonders gefiel ihm das Bett, das an einer Wand stand. Es war gar kunstvoll aus purem Golde gefertigt. Eine Fee hatte es dem Ahnherrn geschenkt und einen Zauber darauf gelegt, also: daß jeder, der in dem Bette liege, so lange es unversehrt sei, nie solle von Krankhe
