Das Schweizerdeutsche Worterbuch - nach 150 Jahren beim Buchstaben Z angekommen Heft 222, die erste Lieferung des 17. Bandes, enthalt alle Worter, die entweder nur aus Z oder aber aus Z plus einem Vokal (ohne diesem direkt folgendem Konsonanten) be- stehen. Den Anfang macht der Buchstabe Z, unter dessen Zusammensetzung ZuriZ wir einer zum Gluck langst vergangenen Praxis begegnen: Um 1865 sagte man von einem, der wegen Diebstahls den Zurcher Verbrecherstempel, ein Z, aufgebrannt erhielt, er hat s Zurizatt uf em Rugge. Ein Z druckt sodann Verwunderung (Z! das ischt doch fataal!), Bejahung (Z, iich weiss es) oder, schnalzend gesprochen, Missbilligung aus (Z z z! Es het doch eke Gattig!). Wiederholtes z, za, za, zi, zie, zo, zu, zui oder zu fungiert als Lockruf: Katzen ruft man chumm, zi zi zi, Kalber und Fohlen u zie zie zie, Ziegen o za za za za, Schafe za za za, und Schweine reagieren auf zu zu zuuli. Verbreitet nennt man auch die Katze selbst kindersprachlich Zi, Ziz oder Zizi. Ostschweizerisches Zioo ist wiederum ein Schlittenruf. Und im Postheiri, einer Art Nebenspalter des 19. Jahrhunderts, bezeichnete man um 1850 die Appenzeller scherzhaft als Zuaven - eigentlich der Name eines Berberstammes, im 19. Jahrhundert aber ein gangiger Begriff fur in Nordafrika rekrutierte und orientalisch uniformierte Soldner. Der grosste Teil des Heftes ist dem so unscheinbar wirkenden, aber eine ungeheure Vielfalt von Anwendungen aufweisenden Wortchen z(e) beziehungsweise zue gewidmet. In der Standardsprache in der Lautung zu zusammengefallen, war ze ursprunglich die Praposition, zue hingegen das Adverb, eine Trennung, welche die schweizerdeutschen Mundarten des Mittellandes teilweise, manche alpine Mundarten sogar vollstandig bewahrt haben. Das Wort kann als Adverb, als Praposition, als Adjektiv und als bedeutungsentleerte Partikel fungieren; es druckt lokale (wo? wohin?), temporale (wann?), modale (wie?), finale (wofur?), konsekutive (wozu?) und sonstige Relationen aus. Als lokale Praposition gebraucht, konnen die Sprecher wegen ihrer jeweiligen Verwendung von z(e) aneinander vorbeireden: Die Walliser und Walser verstehen unter z Fryburg nach Freiburg, die Mittellander aber in Freiburg. Auch das temporale z(e) bezeichnet Verschiedenes: Fur die Nordschweizer bedeuten etwa z Aabig oder z Nacht am Abend, in der Nacht, fur die Bundner Walser aber meint z Jaar im folgenden Jahr. Den Abschluss des Heftes machen Worter mit der Lautstruktur z plus Vokal plus b, also beispielsweise zable zappeln und das frankoprovenzalische Lehnwort zybe auf dem Eis gleiten.
