About the Author: LYNN LAUERMAN is a freelance science writer and editor, and the cofounder of J&L Scientific Editing. Lauerman contributed to Human Diseases and Conditions (2000), a health encyclopedia designed for students, published by Charles Scribner's Sons in collaboration with a medical board from the duPont Hospital for Children. She is currently editing the second supplement to the series, a volume on infectious diseases. She also wrote for the 2000 edition of the Science and Technology Almanac. Lauerman, who lives in Carlsbad, California, received her Ph.D. in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego.
