About the Book

Perhaps all of us yearn for that place where our hearts are formed, that place of childhood that, once exited, remains lost. A journey that runs from an adventurous childhood in West Africa to survival in the strange urban jungles of America is exquisitely portrayed through prose, poetry, art and photography. In this book we walk the paths of home sickness, heart ache, abandonment and loss. Portrayed with tensile strength and the vivid colors of hand spun cotton the author's journey to acceptance and survival draws us in. Above it all, joy shimmers in small, exquisite moments of light. https: //sites.google.com/site/sanghabini/
About the Author: Joanne Burns Williams was born in West Africa. Home was a sandstone house built on the table rock of the Bandiagara escarpment. Joanne often tells her children that her childhood playground had a twenty mile radius. She did not miss television, electricity or indoor plumbing. She and her siblings were too busy climbing cliffs, exploring caves, riding horses and playing with an ever evolving menagerie that always included a monkey named Cheeko. At the age of six Joanne left home to attend boarding school. The school was a thousand miles of corrugated roads, washed out bridges, erratic borders and foot trails from home. There were no telephones, no internet and communication with home was minimal. Leaving the freedom and security of home for this austere and rigid place impacted her deeply. Books and writing became her companions and remain an integral part of her life to this day. Joanne was sent to America for her senior year of high school and for college. To her American born parents, she was being sent home. To Joanne, she was leaving home. Today Joanne lives in Oklahoma. She shares her life with her husband, children, grandchildren and an ever evolving menagerie. She is an artist and a writer. Always attuned to the child she left behind, Joanne has a deep compassion for all children. In 2010 she founded a non-profit organization that focuses on children with developmental disabilities and their families.
