About the Book

Whether you are an armchair enthusiast or a nature explorer, The Secret Life of Mono Lake provides insight into an enigmatic lake. By blending elements of natural and cultural history, a portrait emerges to reveal the importance of the lake as an international bird flyway and a critical flora-and-fauna habitat. It also explains why the lake lost half its water volume and examines how the power of a local grassroots environmental organization saved this remarkable lake. Interactive center bars engage readers by asking questions and featuring food for thought, depicting responsible stewardship, and providing hiking essentials. Acting as a recreation resource guide as well, this book presents hiking trails and current camping connections along with the best time to visit, driving directions, and contact information.
About the Author: Heather Heaton, a Pacific Northwest-based environmental writer and photographer, worked as an interpretive naturalist and a multimedia specialist for the US National Forests and Mount Tongariro National Park in New Zealand for several years. Her assignments led her to write on natural and cultural history, including volcanic eruptions, forest fires, old growth forests, and Native American and New Zealand Maori cultures. Both her written and photographic works have appeared in a variety of environmental and cultural publications including: Cultural Survival Magazine, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument's interactive guide, California's Eldorado National Forest's The Nugget, and Southern Connecticut State University's The Seed. If you find yourself hiking in the Pacific Northwest, you may come across one of a wide range of interpretive trail signs she has written. While working on her Master's degree in Science Education and Environmental Studies, her interest in highlighting unique landscapes within National Forests began to take shape. This is book one in her Secret Life Series. The others include The Secret Life of Mono Lake and The Secret Life of Mount St. Helens. You can also view her documentary photography at http: //www.heatherheaton.photos. She lives with her husband, Olaf, and their Labrador retriever, Zoe in Portland, Oregon.
