Meine ersten Erinnerungen haften an einzelnen häßlichen Szenen im Elternhause. Die weinende, betrübt einherschleichende Mutter, der zornig scheltende Vater sind die am fernsten liegenden Bilder. Später entsinne ich mich, daß die Mutter immer krank war. Häßliche Auftritte gab es auch da noch. Ich fürchte, ich habe die Mutter nicht so geliebt, wie sie es um mich verdient hat. Ihr stilles Dulden lag meiner wilden, aufbrausenden Natur nicht. Am liebsten wäre ich ihrem Peiniger an die Kehle gesprungen, wenn er ihr harte Worte gab, wenn er mich Wechselbalg oder Kuckucksei nannte. Obgleich ich die Bedeutung der Worte gar nicht verstand. Ich war noch nicht zwölf Jahre alt, als meine Mutter starb. Für die arme Dulderin war es eine Erlösung - für mich ein Unglück, dessen Tragweite ich erst in späteren Jahren voll ermessen konnte. Erst viel später, Jahrzehnte später, habe ich verstehen gelernt, was mir an jenem Tage genommen worden war. Die Jahre nach dem Tode meiner Mutter, bis zu meinem fünfzehnten Jahre sind mir wie eine ununterbrochene Kette von Unannehmlichkeiten in Erinnerung. Lichtblicke waren es, wenn ich zu den Großeltern durfte. Bei ihnen war ich daheim. Und als ich eines Tages von meinem Vater gezüchtigt worden war - ungerecht, wie ich meinte - da riß ich aus, und wanderte zu Fuß die neun Stunden über den Wald zu den Großeltern. Einige Tage durfte ich bei ihnen bleiben, dann kam mein Vater, und ich mußte wieder mit nach Hause. Liebe zu mir war es nicht, die ihn dazu trieb, mich wieder zu holen. Erst viel später habe ich begriffen, daß, solange er mich bei sich hatte, immer eine gewisse Nachsicht mit ihm geübt wurde, wenn er mit der Pacht im Rückstande war. Und das war wohl meistens der Fall. Das flotte Leben, das er führte, verschlang zu viel. Oft hörte ich damals des Abends Gläserklingen und lustiges Frauenlachen aus den unteren Räumen zu mir herauftönen. Ich war neugierig ndash; sehr neugierig.
