Dies glauben Kryptozoologen, die sich mit der Suche nach verborgenen Tierarten (Kryptiden) befassen. Es hat den Anschein, als würde fast in jedem größeren See ein Monster vermutet. Jene vermeintlichen Untiere sollen Plesiosaurier, Mosasaurier, Dinosaurier, achtarmige Oktopusse, zehnarmige Kalmare, Riesenhaie, Riesenkrokodile, Riesenschlangen, Riesenschildkröten oder Ur-Wale sein. Sie heißen beispielsweise "Aggie", "Bessie", "Chessie", "Grytty", "Lizzy", "Parkie", "Storsie", "Tessie" oder "Wally". Angeblich sind sie bis zu 100 Meter lang. Mehr als 100 Monster in Seen, Mooren und Meeren aus allen fünf Erdteilen werden in dem Buch "Seeungeheuer" des Wiesbadener Wissenschaftsautors Ernst Probst vorgestellt. Aus seiner Feder stammen auch die Werke "Affenmenschen. Von Bigfoot bis zum Yeti" und "Nessie. Das Monsterbuch". Mit dem Begriff Seeungeheuer bezeichnet man im deutschsprachigen Gebiet sowohl Geschöpfe im Salzwasser von Meeren als auch solche im Süßwasser von Seen. Einst lebten Seeungeheuer vor allem in der Phantasie der Seeleute, die große Gefahren wie Unwetter und unerklärlich wirkende Naturerscheinungen mit Ungeheuern und Geistern erklärten. In historischen Schilderungen war von riesigen Ungeheuern, die Schiffe angreifen, Seeleute verschlingen oder Wasser spucken, die Rede. In Meeren und Seen lebende Ungeheuer kommen aber auch in Mythen vieler Völker vor. Uralt sind Berichte über Seeungeheuer im Alten Testament der Bibel, in griechischen Sagen und in germanischen Mythen. Man denke nur an das Meeresungeheuer Leviathan, an Sirenen sowie Skylla und Charybdis in Homers Odyssee und an die Midgardschlange, die angeblich die ganze Erde umspannte. About the Author: Ernst Probst, geboren 1946 in Neunburg vorm Wald (Bayern), absolvierte ab 1960 in Nürnberg erfolgreich eine Schriftsetzerlehre und wurde 1970 nach einem anderthalbjährigen Volontariat Zeitungsjournalist in Nürnberg, Bayreuth und Mainz. In seiner Freizeit schrieb er zahlreiche populärwissenschaftliche Artikel für Tageszeitungen (FAZ, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Welt, Berliner Morgenpost, Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung, Südwest Presse Ulm, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Wiener Zeitung, Salzburger Nachrichten, Oberösterreichische Nachrichten), Zeitschriften (kosmos, Damals, bild der wissenschaft, Deutsches Allgemeines Sonntagsblatt), Wissenschaftsdienste (Deutscher Forschungsdienst) und Nachrichtenagenturen (dpa, AP, KNA, epd) in Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz sowie mehr als 300 Bücher, Taschenbücher, Broschüren und E-Books über die Erdgeschichte, Menschheitsgeschichte und berühmte Frauen. Sein Buch "Deutschland in der Urzeit" (1986) gilt als das erste populärwissenschaftliche Werk über die Erdgeschichte von Deutschland und wurde im "Spiegel" vorgestellt. Seine Werke über die Urzeit, Steinzeit, Bronzezeit, Dinosaurier, Raubkatzen und berühmte Personen befinden sich in zahlreichen Bibliotheken der ganzen Welt und werden in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur zitiert.
