Europäische Siedler urbanisierten mehr oder weniger erfolgreich das Land an einem unvergleichlichen Flusssystem, das sich unter verschiedenen Namen auf 3.700 Kilometer aus den Großen Seen speist. 293 Kilometer misst die 1959 eröffnete Wasserstraße Sankt Lorenz Strom, beginnend im Ontariosee am Fuße der Niagara-Wasserfälle bis zum Atlantik. An seinen Ufern entwickelten sich aufregende Metropolen wie Toronto, Montreal und Quebec. An mehreren Stellen bildet er die Grenze zwischen Kanada und den USA. So auch zwischen den Thousand Islands. Ein akribischer Zähler kam auf 1864 Inseln. Ihre Ausmaße schwanken zwischen 124 Quadratkilometern mit mittelalterlichen Ritterburgen, intimen Refugien und Winzlingen mit nur einem Baum.
