A ceux qui ont pratique les autres ecrits de Seneque les Lettres a Lucilius n'offriront guere autre chose, pour le fond, que les traites sur la consolation, la brievete de la vie, la colere, la clemence, la fermete du sage, la tranquillite de l'ame, les bienfaits. Mais comme elles sont une conversation, poursuivie au jour le jour, avec un ami, elles ont souvent quelque chose de plus intime, bien que l'auteur s'adresse plus d'une fois, par-dela l'ami, au public et a la posterite. Comme elles furent ecrites vers la fin de sa vie par un homme qui avait connu de bonne heure les succes mondains, les succes litteraires et les honneurs, puis l'exil, - ensuite les honneurs encore, la cour, l'opulence, le pouvoir, enfin la disgrace et qu'elles allaient a un fonctionnaire distingue qui, lui-meme, avait deja une grande experience des hommes et demeurait en contact avec eux, elles fourmillent d'observations morales et d'enseignements qui n'ont pas vieilli, en particulier sur la vraie maniere d'envisager les vexations subies, la retraite, la pauvrete, la maladie, la mort. Comme d'ailleurs elles furent lues et meditees par les paiens du temps de Quintilien, de Juvenal et de Tacite, qui en aimaient le style sentencieux et meme les pointes, par les chretiens qu'elles edifiaient et charmaient, puis par les nobles esprits du Moyen Age, par les humanistes de la Renaissance, puis par ceux du grand siecle et du XVIIIe, elles arrivent a nous du fond de la nuit des temps impregnees de ferveur spirituelle, et l'interet qu'elles presentent pour nous n'en est que plus certain. 124 lettres nous sont parvenues, mais il y en eut davantage. Nous donnons a la fin de notre dernier volume les fragments qu'Aulu-Gelle nous a conserves.
