About the Book

First published in 1811, Sense And Sensibility is a story about the life and love of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne. Summary Of The Book Sense And Sensibility is set in South West England between the years 1792 and 1797. It follows the lives of two sisters, Marianne Dashwood and Elinor Dashwood, who have starkly different personalities. Elinor is more judicious of the two, while Marianne’s persona is characterized by a lot of emotion and enthusiasm. The novel takes the reader into their spartan cottage, where they both experience love and heartbreak. Elinor falls in love with a man who is committed to someone else, while her sister deals with a broken heart for having been cheated by her lover, John Willoughby. Their individual suffering helps them in understanding each other better, and they soon realise that sense must mix with sensibility if they wish to find happiness in a society where money and status often dictate the rules of love. However, the ending of the novel is somewhat ambiguous and it is left to the reader to ascertain if sense and sensibility have actually merged. Sense And Sensibility has been adapted multiple times for television and film. It was made into a 1995 film directed by Ang Lee and was adapted by Emma Thompson. In 2000, the Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was released, which is based on the book. It was also adapted as a 1981 television serial that was directed by Rodney Bennett. About Jane Austen Jane Austen was a well known novelist and one of the most widely read writers in English literature. A few of her other books are Mansfield Park, Emma and Pride And Prejudice. Austen was born at Steventon Rectory on December 16, 1775. She was educated at home for a while under the guidance of her father and brothers. Her writing primarily features irony, realism and social commentary. Her plots usually focus on the dependence of women on marriage as a means to economic security and social standing. She died due to Hodgkin's lymphoma on July 18, 1817, at the age of 41.
