Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Filmwissenschaft, Note: 1, Universität Wien (Institut für Theater-, Film- und Medienwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Filmanalyse, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Bordwell/Thompson begründeten in einem ihrer filmanalytischen (Lehr-)Bücher ihre Entscheidung, "Citizen Kane" (1941) als Referenzfilm für eine Filmanalyse heranzuziehen, indem sie diesem Film "unusual in form and varied in style" attestierten. Aus genau demselben Grund habe ich den Entschluss gefasst, eine Analyse von "Once Upon a Time in America" zu wagen. Ich betrachte diesen Film seit vielen Jahren als herausragendes Kunstwerk in der Filmgeschichte und ich wollte schon lange einen analytischen Überblick über die anspruchsvolle Erzählstruktur in diesem Werk erlangen. Seine Komplexität erhielt der Film u.a. durch die unüblich lange Vorlaufzeit. Zwischen dem Moment, als Leone die Vorlage ("The Hoods" von Harry Grey) entdeckte und dem Drehbeginn vergingen aus rechtlichen, organisatorischen und künstlerischen Gründen ca. 15 Jahre - Jahre, in denen quasi als "work in progress" an dem Script gefeilt wurde. Als der Film im Jahr 1984 in den US-amerikanischen Kinos anlief, wurde er ein finanzieller Flop. Einer der Gründe war zweifelsohne die Tatsache, dass Szenen auf insgesamt 2 1/2 Stunden gestrafft und die gesamte Erzählstruktur geändert wurde. Vor allem Gewalt- und Sexszenen fielen der Schere zum Opfer. Weiters wurde die Geschichte chronologisch erzählt, obwohl gerade in diesem Film die Zeitsprünge ein wesentliches künstlerisches Element darstellen. Diese Schnitte wurden gegen Leones Willen realisiert, der gerichtlich dagegen vorzugehen versuchte. Es ist daher wichtig klar zu stellen, dass sich diese Analyse ausschließlich auf den heute im allgemeinen Umlauf befindlichen Sergio Leone-Cut auf 220 Minuten bezieht (der Regisseur wünschte sich eine "ideale" Länge zwischen 250 und 265 Minuten).
