Les commentaires de Servius aux oeuvres de Virgile connurent un succes considerable durant des siecles et ils sont encore souvent cites de nos jours, tant par les exegetes du poete que par les historiens des religions. On ne sait pas grand-chose de ce savant professeur, sinon qu'il a vecu a Rome, a la fin du IVe s. Le commentateur connait donc une epoque qui oscille entre respect pour un passe glorieux et crainte face aux menaces contemporaines. Le chant VIII de l'Eneide, comme en suspens avant le declenchement des combats au livre suivant, offre des themes qui ne pouvaient que susciter l'interet de Servius. La bienveillante et modeste hospitalite d'Evandre se prete a l'exaltation des moeurs de ces temps anciens; l'episode d'Hercule et Cacus permet certes d'introduire des developpements mythologiques, mais aussi de s'arreter sur une figure particulierement importante dans l'Antiquite tardive, tant pour les paiens que pour les chretiens; la ceremonie en l'honneur du fils de Jupiter est l'occasion d'evoquer de facon minutieuse le rituel si specifique de l'Ara Maxima; la promenade dans Pallantee oscille entre passe et futur. Et que dire du fameux bouclier d'Enee qui clot ce chant si celebre, hymne a la gloire de Rome et d'Auguste ? Ce livre des origines entre en resonance avec les preoccupations d'un homme vivant une periode de grands bouleversements, tant politiques que religieux, et qui s'efforce, en expliquant Virgile a ses disciples, de preserver le passe au moment ou son monde s'ecroule. Le present ouvrage est le troisieme consacre a Servius dans la collection Bude, apres l'edition du commentaire au chant VI et celui au chant IV de l'Eneide. L'edition critique de ce volume repose sur une recension complete de la tradition manuscrite medievale, modifiant ainsi bien des fois le texte etabli par Thilo a la fin du XIXe s. Il s'agit de la premiere traduction en francais de ce commentaire, laquelle s'accompagne de nombreuses notes visant a eclaircir un ecrit riche et souvent elliptique, qui se plait a multiplier les renvois internes tacites et les allusions.
