About the Book

Seventieth Avenue (ISBN-13:978-1507693629) is a book of poems based on the roads that connect us all. Inspiration started at the Kerouac House in Orlando to watching the movie "On The Road" and feeling inspired by some of the characters. The characters triggered memories of my own journey from university to moving and living in New Jersey and having to come back home to Florida to my mother. Once in Florida, I embarked on an exploration by going to Daytona Beach and even partook in open mic night. It rained but I let the road lead me to Sarasota for Favorite Poetry Reading weekend. Even my vacation in Alaska inspired poems when I saw the monument to Mollie in a Skagway park and thought of home in Florida where Natalie was murdered a few blocks from her residence. Also invoked inspiration of Marissa in trial in Florida for firing warning shots. Poetry workshops especially those led by Anastasia Clark, Broward's poet-in-residence were pivotal in providing some inspiration for some poems. The workshop at the Kerouac House led by Monica Wendel also inspired some poems. The ultimate inspiration is the name of the roads that connected me to my mother and sisters, Seventieth Avenue.
About the Author: Suzzette Dawes was born in Jamaica then immigrated to the United States when she was fifteen years old. Other influences such as and work-life balance have forayed in her poetry such as Tortured Souls. Stylistically she prefers to write free verse but has experimented with form in Adventures in the Courtyard. She has participated in workshops led by Broward poet in residence, Anastasia Clark. Most recently she participated in the Sea Glass Poetry Project and joined in reading at various libraries this last April. She was a finalist in the 2014 South Regional/Broward College Library Poetry Contest for her poem "Congestion." She currently resides in Lauderhill, Florida.
