About the Book

Prostitution remained an integral part of Indian History from the beginning of civilization and the wave of time was no exception. Through the lens of gender, a detailed view of this is found in Kautilya’s Arthashastra, Puranas, Epics, Kamasutra, Samhitas, Smritis, Buddhists, and Jain texts of the period. With the transformation of society from a Nomadic to a settled society, women gradually lost social mobility and limited their freedom. They become man’s ward possession, objects of enjoyment to the extent of being considered as ‘private property’. while other women as publicly accessible (Nariprakashasarvagamya). This profession works on regular payment for favors received. In the remote days of the ‘ barter economy’ when money or currency was yet unknown gifts were equivalent to cash payments. Prostitution as a profession appeared in works of literature a few centuries after the Vedic period. In these works of literature, we hear of the women of easy virtue or the wife of illicit love affairs. Even after the Vedic period, Society continued being polygamous and polyandry gradually disappeared except in some small pockets. The process of the emergence of prostitution must have been slow, varying from region to region and from age to age. By the later Vedic age, which is around the Eighth or Seventh centuries BC, we have references to a more regularised form of prostitution recognized as a social institution. Early Buddhist literature, especially the Jatakas, bears testimony to the existence of different categories of prostitutes, and incidentally provides some information about their fees and financial position. The term Sadharani or Samanya are synonyms for the prostitute, women not obliged to one man as Varamgana, Varastri Varavadhu, and Varamukhya terms used for public women. Panyastri was used for women who received money for their favor.
