About the Book

This publication is an edited English commentary to the various shabads found within the Srī Nānak Parkāsh Granth by the great Kavī Santokh Singh Jī. Kavī Santokh Singh Jī was instrumental in saving the details of the lives of the Gurūs. He created a hagiographic account of Srī Gurū Nānak Dev Jī's life within this text and along with the chronological details, the shabads uttered within the discourses are recorded. However, in the last few years a few Punjābī commentaries have been published which are missing a lot of the shabads written in the hagiographic account. The reason for this is the fact that Kavī Santokh Singh Jī added the shabads relevant to the accounts and discourses in various countries with various celebrities however some of these shabads do not appear within the Gurbānī of the Srī Gurū Granth Sāhib Jī. Many radical Sikhs consider these shabads 'kachī bānī' (unripe or crude words uttered by the Gurū). Personally I do not share this view and I do not think it should be up to anyone to consider what is and is not Gurbānī. If it is uttered by the Gurū it has been uttered in order to assist humans swim across this worldly ocean. The fact that some shabads are not found within the anthology of the Srī Gurū Granth Sāhib Jī is down to the Gurūs and it can be because some shabads contained teachings which were not universal such as the Prānsanglī by Srī Gurū Nānak Dev Jī. I decided to write this tīkā to show the importance of shabads within the works and retain them whilst other writers are trying to eradicate them from the Sīkh psyche. This tīkā could not have been written without the assistance of the commentary penned by Giānī Harbans Singh Nirmal under the tutelage of Mahant Surjit Singh Jī Sevāpanthī. I have based most if this text on that book and kept its title name as the title to this publication.
