About the Book

The author Sudhanshu Mani, a retired General Manager of Indian Railways, is credited with developing and delivering India’s first indigenous semi-high-speed train, the Vande Bharat express. But apart from his accomplishments as a railway engineer, his other interests include Urdu and English literature, particularly poetry, and specifically, the poetry of Ghalib and Shakespeare, arguably two of the greatest poets ever. Mani candidly admits that while he has had no formal education in literature beyond his pre-professional college, he has gained immensely in life from the wisdom of these poets. He realized that there are a whole lot of people in different professions who are in the same boat, pursuing a career in some profession but always striving to read and appreciate good poetry. The book is an interesting and bold attempt to bring the poetry of the two greats face to face, looking for similarities and dissimilarities, a novel juxtaposition which has perhaps never been attempted in such an expansive manner. The genius of both these poets lives on and there is a lot still left to uncover or wonder at but is it easily intelligible to poetry-lovers? Mani seeks to reach the huge readership who love their poetry but a good majority of them are not formally coached to decipher the inherent beauty of words and their nuances. Such a comparison, or rather an analogy of two of different ages, cultures and languages would seem to be an audacious attempt by a person who admittedly is not a scholar but his collation has indeed come out in a fascinating manner. Mani also believes that the book has the potential to promote and popularize Ghalib, generating huge readership among discerning people who are intrigued by Urdu literature, thereby also helping the cause of this beautiful language, while at the same time, revitalizing love for Shakespeare among people who read him in school and college.
