About the Book: Together with his trusted friend and assistant Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes investigates a puzzling murder case. While the first half of the novel is set in London, the story then flashes back to the Salt Lake Valley (in modern Utah) years earlier. Both plot lines eventually meet and culminate in a fascinating conclusion that includes everything readers love about Sherlock Holmes stories. From today's perspective, A Study in Scarlet's non-linear structure feels surprisingly modern.

Our notes are always clearly marked as such, so that they are unambiguously distinguishable from annotations by the original writer. About the Author: Arthur Conan Doyle (* May 22nd, 1859; + July 7th, 1930) was the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle wrote four novels and 56 short stories featuring the iconic literary detective. Interestingly, during his work, the author developed a certain "love/hate relationship" with the character he had created, leading to a point where he no longer cared whether he would write further Holmes stories or not. This mindset led him to ask higher and higher prices from publishers for new works, which - to his own surprise - they were willing to pay, rendering him one of the best-paid authors of his time. Doyle's first Holmes novel "A Study in Scarlet" was followed by "The Sign of the Four", "The Hound of the Baskervilles", and "The Valley of Fear".
