About the Book

Shirley; Shirley est un roman de Charlotte Brontë, paru en 1849. Sa popularité a permis à Shirley de devenir un prénom de femme. (Dans le roman, le père de Shirley lui donne ce nom, qu'il a au départ choisi pour un fils). Le roman se situe dans le Yorkshire dans la période 1811-1812, pendant la dépression industrielle due aux guerres napoléoniennes et à la guerre de 1812. Les quatre caractères centraux sont analysés par contrastes: les frères Robert Moore (industriel dont le Moulin tourne à vide en raison de la guerre) et Louis Moore (précepteur privé attaché aux enfants d'une famille); et leurs deux aimées, Caroline Helstone, timide et incertaine (qui aurait été copiée sur Ellen Nussey, amie rencontrée à l'école de Miss Wooler), et Shirley Keeldar, héritière d'une fortune, sans doute à l'image d'Emily Brontë, soeur de l'auteur. La maison de la famille Keeldar s'appelle Fieldhead; Charlotte Brontë s'est inspirée pour Fieldhead d'un manoir élisabethain appelé Oakwell Hall.
About the Author: Biographie Charlotte Brontë est une romancière née le 21 avril 1816 à Thorton et morte le 31 mars 1855 à Haworth dans le même comté en Angleterre. Troisième fille du révérend Patrick Brontë, au sein d'une famille de condition modeste qui compte six enfants, elle bénéficie, comme ses quatre soeurs et son frère, de la présence d'un père qui a poussé ses études classiques jusqu'à l'Université de Cambridge, et n'hésite pas à leur transmettre sa culture et sa vision du monde. Elle connaît cependant très tôt, alors qu'elle est encore tout enfant, le deuil de sa mère, puis de ses deux soeurs aînées, frappées par la tuberculose. Malgré sa condition de femme et son absence de moyens financiers, elle réussit à publier ses poèmes et ceux de ses soeurs (sous des noms masculins), en 1846, et surtout, à publier Jane Eyre, qui rencontre un succès considérable. Elle est considérée aujourd'hui comme l'une des romancières de langue anglaise les plus accomplies. Traduction: MM Ch Romey et A Rolet en 1858.
