About the Book

This translation of Shri Durga Saptashati (श्री दुर्गा सप्तशती) has been the endeavour of late Sh. Radhey Shyam Sharma, who served as a Rajathan Administrative Services Officer. In his introduction to this translation, Shri R. S. Sharma quotes Shelley, comparing his undertaking of translating this holy scripture to "a desire of the moth for the star", "for love for something afar." The style and diction chosen by the author in this Durga Saptshati book is poetic in nature, each verse follows a rhythmic pattern and a rhyme scheme, recreating the mood of the original verse in a poetic ethos. There are 13 Adhyayas, 700 verses in this Purana which form the narrative base of the Shakta Cult. Besides these, the author has included in this translation; Kavacha, Argala, Keelaka, Kunjika; the accesories to the main text. To acquaint a stray reader with the inner purport of the scripture, an appendix, a glossary of technical words fully explaining the connotations of the terms used in the Saptashati and required for the Tantric worship of every Sadhaka, have also been added by the author. The author has tried to explain the intent and meaning, not only of the Tantric terms, but also of the instructional portions and commands of its accessory texts. Shri R. S. Sharma reflects a deep understanding of the original and the source language, mastership of the target language, and a practice of discreet word selection. Along with that, he has also given many symbolic aspect of the Devi herself, the demons Durga Maa persecuted, and the gods who aided her. "Mother Durga," he writes, "meaning one who is unapproachable, extremely subtle, illusive, and beyond comprehension in her real sense." He further concludes that, "it is my sincere wish that they (readers) will avail of Mother Devi's grace, spiritual strength, and acquaintance with a Sanskrit classic of religious and classical nature."
