Il bilancio che fa Zacary della sua vita è impietoso e deciderà di cambiarlo radicalmente. Il breve tempo a sua disposizione verrà speso per far si che la sua Rosmary possa raggiungere la tanto agognata serenità affettiva e finanziaria. All'insaputa di Rosmary risolverà i problemi della donna, ma a modo suo e come solo un killer può fare. Si ribellerà alla sua gang che si vendicherà cercando in tutti i modi di eliminarlo; ma con una serie di fortuite e talvolta esilaranti coincidenze, riuscirà sempre ad avere la meglio, spazzando via dalla vita di Rosmary il violento marito, un depravato padrone di casa e reinserire Lanny, il figlio disabile della donna, nella scuola da cui era stato cacciato. Riuscirà attraverso mille sotterfugi e rocambolesche peripezie a sotrarre preziosi e denaro a Gregory Offenbach, consulente fiscale dai gusti discutibili di Ray Malansky, beni destinati al capo indiscusso della gang. Sulle tracce di Zacary dopo una serie di inspiegabili delitti, si pone l'ispettore Jeremy Stanich che proverà a far luce sullo strano quanto singolare intreccio di avvenimenti, e malgrado il suo fiuto da segugio, arriverà troppo tardi a svelare la verità. Il definitivo colpo di scena avverrà alla morte di Zacary, che inconsapevolmente e con la solita circostanza fortuita riuscirà anche da defunto ad incastrare l'ultimo tassello del puzzle, portando a compimento la sua missione. Rosmary la persona più importante della sua vita è salva. Zacary è riuscito finalmente a riscattarsi da una vita anonima e sbiadita nonché priva di significato.Il romanzo offre al lettore un mix di sensazioni: ironia, sarcasmo e un retrogusto di tenerezza e amore, accompagnate da esilaranti chicche di autentica comicità.
