About the Book

Los siete locos es la primera de dos novelas del escritor argentino Roberto Arlt. Fue publicada en 1929, seguida de una segunda parte titulada Los lanzallamas, también publicada por Linkgua Ediciones.

En Los siete locos y Los Lanzallamas, Arlt pone en escena a personajes marginales pertenecientes a sociedades secretas y logias, quienes quieren financiar una revolución con una cadena de prostíbulos.


¿Quiénes van a hacer la revolución social, sino los estafadores, los desdichados, los asesinos, los fraudulentos, toda la canalla que sufre abajo sin esperanza alguna? ¿O te crees que la revolución la van a hacer los cagatintas y los tenderos?


Con este pretexto, cambiar el mundo a través de una revolución, transcurre Los siete locos, hacer la revolución por una vida de humillación, por cubrir un robo, por un matrimonio desgraciado, por un invento absurdo; o por autoafirmarse como ser humano; o por curiosidad.

Pero nada mejor que las propias palabras del mismo autor explicando el argumento de Los siete locos a partir de una anécdota que mantuvo con un lector:


Me escribe un lector:


Estimado señor: Me he enterado de que ha salido una novela suya llamada Los siete locos. Como dispongo de poco dinero para invertir en libros, le agradecería me diera algunos datos respecto a ella, para saber si vale o no la pena de gastarse el tiempo y unos pesos en su lectura.


Dudé un momento. Luego me dije que, habiendo hablado de tantas obras ajenas, bien tenía el derecho de explicar cómo era lo mío. Además, si hay gente que se conforma con conocer el argumento de una novela, sin tomarse el trabajo de leerla, ni gastar unos centavos en adquirirla, les regalaré a mis lectores ese argumento, que va franco de porte.

El argumento es simple. Uno de los personajes, llamado el Astrólogo, quiere organizar una sociedad secreta para revolucionar y quebrantar el presente estado de cosas. Para llevar a cabo su proyecto necesita dinero. En estas circunstancias, Erdosain le ofrece el medio de adquirirlo. Se trata de secuestrar a un pariente que lo ha abofeteado.

A mí, como autor, estos personajes no me son simpáticos. Pero los he tratado. Y todo autor es esclavo durante un momento de sus personajes, porque ellos llevaban en sí verdades atroces que merecían ser conocidas.
