About the Book

The practical implementation of encryption mechanisms aims to ensure that only the intended recipients are able to decrypt the encrypted message. Public-key encryption, for instance, involves the use of two distinct keys for each party involved, such as an individual user, an organization, or a network node. One key, known as the public key or encryption key, is used for encryption and is accessible to all users. The other key, known as the secret key or decryption key, is used for decryption and is kept confidential, known only to the owner. The generation of these key pairs relies on cryptographic algorithms designed to solve complex mathematical problems and create trapdoor functions. Security primarily relies on the private key, while the public key does not need to be stored without compromising security. Two well-known applications of public-key cryptosystems are as follows:

  1. Public key encryption, exemplified by the ElGamal encryption (1985), involves encrypting a message using the recipient's public key, which can only be decrypted correctly by the owner of the corresponding private key. This method is commonly used to ensure the confidentiality of messages during communication. In general, confidentiality of a message involves the transmitter employing an encryption algorithm with the recipient's public key, and decryption being performed using the recipient's paired private key.
  2. Digital signatures, also based on the ElGamal encryption (1985), are used to sign messages using the sender's private key. These signatures can be authenticated by anyone using the sender's public key. This algorithm not only verifies that the sender had access to the corresponding private key but also guarantees that the transferred message has not been tampered with. The signature is inherently tied to the original message, and any attempt to alter the message would cause the verification process to fail. It should be noted that even if a similar message is used, the verification will fail. Digital signature algorithms are widely employed for sender authentication in general.
