Que mi abuela fuera de Islas Canarias y mi abuelo vasco; que hubiera moros en la calle Herrera al doblar de casa y en el número 17 de mi propia calle; que al lado, puerta con puerta y pared medianera compartida, estuviera la casa de huéspedes de Marina la mexicana y Pancho el gallego; que Tomasa, africana, esclava apenas sesenta años antes, celebrara bembés al fondo de mi casa; que el teacher fuera un jamaicano llegado a Cuba en una balsa y que los asturianos, ricos dueños de la fábrica de tabacos y cigarros Fundador jugaran al dominó con el criollo Tatita, el guagüero y sus amigos. Y que, en una esquina al lado del prostíbulo, existiera el colegio americano para los hijos de acomodados empresarios de Estados Unidos. Años más tarde, tuve conciencia de que el Caribe implicaba - también- un régimen de tolerante convivencia.Quién sabe si estos guanajayenses tenían presente que Luis Felipe, duque de Orleans -luego Felipe II, rey de Francia por dieciocho años- y sus hermanos, el conde de Beaujolais y el duque de Montpensie, los tres hijos de Felipe Igualdad, a finales del siglo XVIII, pasan gran parte de los cuatro meses que están en Cuba, desterrados, en la casa que poseen los condes de Jibacoa, frente al parque de Guanajay.
