Silvio Trentin (1885-1944) è una delle figure più significative dell'antifascismo e della Resistenza. Le traiettorie della sua vita sono state molteplici, tutte condotte con passione incrollabile: originale studioso del diritto pubblico e delle sue trasformazioni a cavallo tra le due guerre mondiali; ma soprattutto un uomo politico capace di affrontare la crisi delle istituzioni statali e la necessità di una loro integrale rifondazione. Durante gli anni dell'esilio francese, in particolare, ha proposto una soluzione dichiaratamente rivoluzionaria, socialista e federalista, avviando il movimento Libérer et Fédérer e contribuendo in modo significativo, dopo l'8 settembre 1943, alle attività del Comitato di Liberazione Nazionale Regionale Veneto. Il suo lascito è stato coltivato dai figli Franca, Giorgio e Bruno (quest'ultimo si è rivelato come uno dei protagonisti della storia del sindacalismo italiano della seconda metà del Novecento) e rappresenta un universo fertile di idee e sollecitazioni sempre attuali. Questo volume ripropone in una veste nuova il testo della prima e unica edizione italiana del lavoro del più importante biografo di Trentin, Frank Rosengarten, pubblicato da Feltrinelli nel 1980 e oggi pressoché introvabile.

Frank Rosengarten
Nato nel 1927 a New York e formatosi accademicamente alla Columbia University, è stato dal 1962 al 1992 professore di letteratura italiana e comparata, prima alla Case Western Reserve University, a Cleveland in Ohio, poi, dal 1967, alla City University of New York. Oltre che su Silvio Trentin, ha svolto importanti ricerche sulla stampa azionista italiana e su Vasco Pratolini, ed è stato anche animatore, dal 1983, con M.E. Brown, del Research Group on Socialism and Democracy, che è tuttora attivo e pubblica, dal 1984, l'importante rivista Socialism and Democracy. È stato altresì un grande studioso di Antonio Gramsci, C.L.R. James, Marcel Proust e Giacomo Leopardi. Nel 2014, anno della sua morte, ha pubblicato in Italia, con Firenze University Press, il testo autobiografico Through Partisan Eyes. My Friendships, Literary Education, and Political
