Dies hat einen enormen Kostendruck auf die Unternehmen zur Folge. Um in diesem Wettbewerb zu bestehen ist es für Unternehmen mehr denn je wichtig, den steigenden Kundenanforderungen an Produkte und Dienstleistungen gerecht zu werden. Einen entscheidenden Einfluss hat hierbei die Qualität der betrieblichen Prozesse; es gilt sie als bestimmenden Faktor für die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit wahrzunehmen. Bereits in der Vergangenheit wurden Qualitätsmanagementkonzepte wie das Total Quality Management (TQM)* entwickelt, mit dem Ziel der Einführung von kundenorientierten Qualitätsstandards, die bei gleichzeitiger Kostenminimierung dauerhafte Unternehmenserfolge garantieren sollen. Die Six - Sigma - Methode geht nun darüber hinaus. Sie zeichnet sich durch ihren datenorientierten Ansatz und die Verwendung statistischer Messungen der Prozessleistung aus, mit dem Ziel der Null- Fehler-Qualität. Hierbei betrachtet man Variationen als Fehler und die Hauptursache für Kundenunzufriedenheit in Form von Beschwerden, Garantiefällen, Rücknahmen, Projektüberschreitungen, Nacharbeit, Überproduktion, Lieferverspätungen, mangelnder Zuverlässigkeit und Verschwendung im Design. Die Six - Sigma - Methode ist eine Systematik, die zur Vermeidung von Variationen führen soll. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es nun, die Six - Sigma - Methode vorzustellen und zu bewerten, inwiefern ihr Einsatz für ein Unternehmen lohnenswert ist. Hierbei beginne ich damit, die Entstehung der Methode zu erläutern und sie generell zu definieren. Darüber hinaus sollen hier die wichtigsten Voraussetzungen für einen Einsatz von Six Sigma aufgezeigt werden, die statistischen Grundlagen erläutert und die Problematik der
