Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Der Bildungstourist Goethe bereiste im Jahre 1787 Italien mit der Postkutsche und stellte fest: „Italien ohne Sizilien macht gar kein Bild in der Seele. Hier ist erst der Schlüssel zu allem." Der deutsche Schriftsteller Johann Gottfried Seume unternahm zwei Jahrzehnte später von Leipzig aus einen Spaziergang nach Syrakus in Sizilien und entdeckte den „bestialischen Makkaronenfraß" des gemeinen Sizilianers. Aber welches Bild weckt Sizilien? Selbst wer noch nie in Sizilien, diesem oft vergessenen Anhängsel von Italien, gewesen ist, hat bestimmte Vorstellungen von der Insel - nicht zuletzt durch die vielen Filme, die in und über Sizilien entstehen. Angefangen bei den Klassikern wie Stromboli über Giuseppe Tornatores Nuovo Cinema Paradiso bis hin zu der Serie Allein gegen die Mafia kam Sizilien in jedes Wohnzimmer, oft voller Klischees und Stereotypen: rauchende Schrotflinten und die Mafia, wüstenähnliche Landstriche, archaischer Ehrbegriff, dornige Kaktusfeigen. In dieser Arbeit möchte ich untersuchen, wie Sizilien im Film dargestellt wird. Um den Umfang dieser Arbeit nicht zu sprengen und die einzelnen Filme ausreichend analysieren zu können, möchte ich mich auf drei Regisseure beschränken: Luchino Visconti, Francesco Rosi und Pietro Germi. Die sechs von mir ausgewählten Filme sind in den Jahren von 1948 bis 1976 entstanden, so dass aufgrund des zeitlichen Spektrums auch darauf eingegangen werden kann, ob eine Entwicklung in der filmischen Darstellung stattgefunden hat. Zunächst möchte ich kurz die Vorgehensweise für diese Arbeit und die Kriterien, nach denen ich die Filme der drei Regisseure ausgewählt habe, erläutern. Folgende Filme habe ich für die Untersuchung ausgewählt: 1. La terra trema (1948) dt. Titel: Die Erde bebt von Luchino Visconti. 2. Il Gattopardo (1962) dt.
