Vielfach wurde der ursprüngliche Stoff bearbeitet und ergänzt. Vermutlich übt Kassandra, aufgrund ihrer Schönheit und Weisheit sowie ihres tragischen Schicksals und Leids, eine so große Faszination aus. In der Sage vom Trojanischen Krieg spielt Kassandra die Rolle der Warnerin. Sie kündet vergebens den Untergang der Stadt an und rät des Weiteren vergebens von der Aufnahme des hölzernen Pferdes ab. Ihre Gabe, in die Zukunft schauen zu können, erhält sie von dem Gott Apoll. Dieser verliebt sich in Kassandra und verleiht ihr, unter der Bedingung, dass sie ihm ihre Liebe schenkt, die Sehergabe. Doch nachdem sie die Gabe der Weissagung empfangen hat, verweigert sie sich Apoll und wird von ihm dadurch gestraft, dass ihre Prophezeiungen keinen Glauben finden. Das Ende der Seherin Kassandra ist ebenfalls tragisch: obwohl sie den Untergang Trojas vorhergesehen hat, kann sie diesen nicht verhindern und wird nach dem Sieg der Griechen über die Trojaner von Agamemnon als Sklavin nach Mykenä verschleppt. In Mykenä verüben Klytämenestra und ihr Geliebter Ägisth einen Mordanschlag auf Agamemnon, bei dem auch Kassandra ums Leben kommt. Die Sage der Kassandra ist bis heute ein Stoff geblieben, der Leser wie Autoren begeistert. Eine bedeutende Variation des Kassandra-Stoffes findet sich in Friedrich Schillers Ballade Kassandra. Diese wurde im "Taschenbuch für Damen auf das Jahr 1803" herausgegeben von Huber, Lafontaine, Pfeffel und andern (Tübingen [1802], S. 210-214), zum ersten Mal gedruckt. Danach erschien sie in dem Band "Gedichte von Friedrich Schiller. Zweyter Theil, Leipzig bey Siegfried Lebrecht Crusius 1803".
