About the Book

A series of semi-autobiographical vignettes illustrating the author's colorful boyhood and poor, hard-working family in Texas in the 1940's and 1950's. Humorous, entertaining and sometimes outlandish, the sketches are unified by a theme of love: filial piety, naive sexual awakening (a comical fixation on a misplaced object of affection), sordid lust (across the Mexican border), heartbreak, maternal devotion, and the bonds of marriage. Sparkling with lively Texan banter, the language flows with images so visceral you can smell the cow dung, so vivid you can hear the mariachi band. If you enjoy reading Mark Twain, you will love this book.

Author Dale Walker (pen name T. Weed) says of this book, "I had written these stories, but until my mother wrote her story at age 80, I didn't know what to do with them. My determination to let her words see the light of day allowed me to make the book. It starts with a family scene, in San Antonio, listening to war news on the radio, older brother Johnny in England, and ends with the father working in a munitions factory getting ready for that war." Like the iconic movie The Last Picture Show, this book evokes a lost era of mid-century Texas. The final chapter offers a poignant imagining of the author's birth, seen through the eyes of his mother, bearing her eighth child, and his father, struggling to maintain his dignity and support his family.

Because of his familiarity with Middle Eastern culture, Walker sympathized with the plight of Palestinians and was incensed at their mistreatment by Israel. He began writing letters criticizing Israel to his local paper, the Hoboken Reporter, which were readily published. As protection from retaliation, he signed the letters as T. Weed. A beekeeper does not go barefaced to an angry hive! A hilarious exchange of angry Letters to the Editor ensued, making the T. Weed pseudonym infamous on the West Bank of the Hudson River. To capitalize on this notoriety, Walker named T. Weed as the author of his subsequent books.
