About the Book

SO YOU WANT TO BE A GURKHA is a personal account of how a young man who had never considered being a soldier, became a British Officer in the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Goorkhas. It also recounts a number of episodes and incidents which illustrate why Gurkhas are unique people, warm and witty human beings and outstanding soldiers. As HRH Prince Harry said: "When you know you are with the Gurkhas I think there's no safer place to be." How right he is.
About the Author: In July 1971 Chris Darnell was commissioned from Sandhurst into the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Goorkhas (The Sirmoor Rifles). He was posted to the 2nd Battalion and joined them in Brunei. He served with Gurkhas in Brunei, Hong Kong, UK and on a major training exercise in Canada. During this period he also had his first tour in Northern Ireland as a platoon commander with The King's Own Scottish Borderers. His last posting with Gurkhas was as the Chief Tactics Instructor at the Gurkha Training Depot in Hong Kong. In 1979 he left the Gurkhas to join the KOSB. He attended the Army's Command and Staff Course and subsequently served on the staffs of 2nd Infantry Division, Headquarters Northern Ireland, 1st British Corps and The Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps, where he led the initial planning for the post-Dayton land operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Having reached the rank of Colonel, he resigned his commission to take a job in Industry. His last appointment in the Army was as a staff officer in the UK Ministry of Defence Central Staffs, responsible for Special Projects and Land Operational Requirements policy. During his regimental soldiering he had six tours in Northern Ireland, at every level of platoon commander, company commander and battalion commander. He was awarded the MBE for Operational Services in Northern Ireland in 1988, and Mentioned In Despatches for Distinguished Service in Northern Ireland in 1990. He commanded 1st Battalion The King's Own Scottish Borderers during the first Gulf War in 1991.
