Il diario di Wilhelm Prüller, membro di un reparto di fanteria motorizzata della 9. Panzer-Division, permette al lettore di dare uno sguardo unico nell'esperienza di guerra di un soldato della Wehrmacht altamente addestrato e motivato, attraverso il vivido resoconto delle innumerevoli e aspre battaglie condotte da Prüller in prima linea dagli anni della trionfante Blitzkrieg in Polonia, Francia e Balcani ai combattimenti nelle steppe della Russia, sino alla disperata difesa del Reich.

Prüller, era un soldato austriaco, il suo diario è un racconto affascinante, avvincente, scritto in prima persona, dalle trincee, da un uomo arruolato (Prüller servì i tre o quattro gradi più bassi come sottufficiale per la maggior parte della guerra, per venire alla fine premiato con la nomina a tenente.). Nei suoi scritti condivide le sue esperienze in diverse campagne. Iniziando con l'invasione della Polonia e la difesa finale della Germania. In questo libro Prüller offre una visione dell'atteggiamento di un normale soldato della Wehrmacht entusiasta del regime di Hitler. Nelle sue lettere spedite alla famiglia a Vienna, egli scrive di Churchill, di bombe V-1 e V-2, ovviamente del Fuhrer, delle radio e delle canzoni tedesche, e fa persino una sorta di futuristica anticipazione su una svolta nucleare.

la maggior parte della storia si svolge tuttavia sul fronte russo. L'autore narra con buon phatos come lui e i suoi uomini hanno compiuto in Russia marce a temperature sotto lo zero, giorno dopo giorno, in una realtà difficilmente inimmaginabile.

Alla fine di questa tragica esperienza Prüller riuscì a sopravvivere al fronte russo rimediando un solo infortunio al ginocchio durante un combattimento!

Apparentemente, Prüller condivideva l'illusione con i suoi compagni nazisti, che in qualche modo la Germania si sarebbe salvata con un miracolo. Mentre la maggior parte della Wehrmacht e persino alcuni membri di S.S. avevano da tempo capito che la Germania era finita.

Negli ultimi anni della sua vita Wilhelm Prüller, anche segnato dalla sua esperienza di guerra, divenne un alcolizzato, che trascorse i suoi ultimi anni di vita nella sua città Vienna.
