C. ist verschwunden. Der Ich-Erzahler macht sich auf die Suche nach dem Freund, kommt jedoch nicht von der Stelle. Er sitzt in einem leeren Uberlandbus mit Blick auf die immer gleiche Landschaft, die immer selben Umrisse des stummen Fahrers. Der Bus scheint stillzustehen. Zugleich schimmert am Horizont eine Großstadt auf. Wird C. dort zu finden sein? Im dorflichen Elternhaus des Protagonisten muss sich Schreckliches ereignet haben. Das Erlebte pragt seine Wahrnehmung. Der in stets neuer Gestalt auftretende „graue Mann“ versetzt ihn in Angst und scheint auf ratselhafte Weise in das Geschehen verwickelt. Der Erzahler verschließt sich zunehmend: Ob auf den endlosen Fluren des alten Jesuitenkollegs oder dem kleinstadtischen Oktobermarkt, er nimmt kaum jemanden wahr, alles ist ihm leer und verlassen. Seine einzige Bezugsperson ist die Mitschulerin K., doch auch das Verhaltnis zu ihr bleibt zwiespaltig. Anstatt sich ihr und der außeren Wirklichkeit zuzuwenden, verliert er sich in einer vagen, sinnlich-geisterhaften Angst- und Sehnsuchtswelt. Zwischen popkulturellen Versatzstucken aus Werbung, Musik, amerikanischen Serien und, nicht zuletzt, David Lynchs „Mulholland Drive“ fuhlt er sich sowohl gefangen als auch geborgen. Jahre spater trifft er K. in der Berliner Philharmonie wieder. Auf ihren Streifzugen durch die winterliche Hauptstadt, ihre graudusteren Straßen und dammrigen Jazz-Lokale versuchen sie, C. auf die Spur zu kommen, allerdings ohne Erfolg. Und stellt ihnen nicht jemand nach? Der Erzahler flieht und gelangt in eine sonnenflirrende, an Los Angeles gemahnende Metropole. „Sonnenstadt“ ist ein Roman des Traumas und der Angst, uber Beziehungs- und Haltlosigkeit sowie die Suche nach dem Schonen, der ebenso Elemente des Coming-of-Age-Romans wie der Road-Novel und des Thrillers miteinander verbindet. Dabei bricht er bewusst mit gewohnten Erzahlmustern und folgt stattdessen in weiten Teilen einer Art (Alb-)Traumlogik, die in verstorend-hypnotischer Sprache die Grenze von realem und surreal-wahnhaftem Geschehen verwischt.
