About the Book

Rather than make a career of poetry, Stanley Thompson has engaged a number of careers from which he has drawn the details and essence of personal experience which he brings forth in Sonnets of Life Well Spent. Motivated by the death of his beloved wife Patricia in 2011, the stories of his journey have come into sharper focus with an enhanced meaning that has allowed him to present this collection of 126 poems in the style of memoir. The reader will not only experience sonnets in the format, and even in the tone, of William Shakespeare, but will come to appreciate the life of the author, a life, indeed, well spent.
About the Author: Stanley Thompson wrote his first poems over fifty years ago while at college. Following the death of his wife in 2011 he restarted his writing of poetry. His background is impressive and shows the array of interests and accomplishments that have allowed him to write on a variety of subjects. In addition he has traveled extensively throughout the world gaining insight of the peoples he writes about. A retired Naval Officer and pilot of carrier jet aircraft he also received his Masters degree in Meteorology at the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School. He has taught college level mathematics, statistics, oceanography and naval history courses in four separate universities. He was comptroller and later president of an aviation company. He has held senior management positions in a long-term Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital. This was followed with many years of search and rescue duties for the St. Louis County Sheriff in Minnesota and later as a patrol deputy in Sierra County of New Mexico. His extensive voluntary service includes Chairman of a District Hospital; Township Supervisor; Chairman of the Local Emergency Preparedness Committee, and Lt. Colonel in the New Mexico State Defense Force. He continues his life writing on average three poems per day, volunteering at a church food shelf weekly and singing in choruses and his church choir. Mr. Thompson resides in Southern New Mexico with his cat named Twinkle Toes or as he affectionately refers, "Twinkie," a pet Rattlesnake called Floyd which roams freely, and countless Quail, Dove and birds with occasional Coyotes thrown in.
