Mitten im ärgsten Winter spazieren gehen, bei Frost und Schnee? Sie sind wohl nicht ganz - gesund, Herr Tanzmann? So oder ähnlich hatte er es oft gehört, wenn er für den Sonntag alle Zusammenkunftspläne in der Goldenen Traube abgelehnt hatte, um seinen gewohnten Spaziergang ins Freie zu unternehmen. Im Sommer zwar hatte er Begleiter genug, denn in der warmen Jahreszeit waren seine Freunde, wie die meisten Berliner, gern bereit, einen großen Ausflug mitzumachen. Sobald es aber wieder Herbst wurde, und der Nordwest die Blätter und den Sommerstaub um die frierenden Ohren der Menschen wirbelte, hatten die Freunde genug und taten nicht mehr mit. Herr Tanzmann wunderte sich darüber, denn ihm brachte jede Jahreszeit neue Reize. Nicht einmal im strengsten Winter setzte er aus. Ja, er freute sich auf seine Spaziergänge im Januar genau so wie auf die im heitersten Sommer. An Hitze und Frost, Regen und Sonnenschein gleich gewöhnt, war er einer jener Glücklichen, die absolut wetterfest sind, denen das Wetter nie eine Freude verdirbt. Also am Sonntag früh gleich nach sieben, als die Nacht noch auf den Straßen der Stadt lag, brach er auf. Der Himmel aber war schon hell, im Westen stand die blasse Scheibe des Vollmonds, und im Osten leuchtete schon das lichte Orangerot der noch unter dem Horizont verborgenen Sonne. Es wird ein schöner Tag, Sie sind ein Glückspilz, Herr Tanzmann! sagte er zu sich in der guten Laune, die er immer hatte, wenn er früh hinauswanderte. Kalt war es freilich auch genug, jene windlose Kälte, die sich wie ein starrer Druck über den Erdboden legt. Fast hätte Herr Tanzmann sich einen Ueberzieher gewünscht, aber er konnte sich nun einmal mit diesem Möbel nicht befreunden. Er ging also einen viertel Meter schneller in der Sekunde, um sich an das Klima, das von dem seines Nachtlagers erheblich abwich, zu gewöhnen. Mit einer Verwünschung Berlins, das den Menschen weich mache wie eine Teerose, bestieg er den Zug und dampfte hinaus.
