About the Book

Soul Hill Lullabies, a poem cycle by Stephanie Mesler, tells the story of life on and around Alma Hill, New York. The Hill, as locals call it is located on the southernmost edge of Allegany County, where the mountains of western New York meld with those of Pennsylvania. Nestled beside the Adirondacks and Catskills at the edge of Appalachia, Alma Hill is taller than Lookout Mountain in Tennessee but more modest. The Hill has been home to the poet's people for much of the last two and a half centuries. Both of her parents grew up on or in the shadow of Alma Hill. Soul Hill Lullabies reminds us that family is tied to land, even in generations far removed, and that land is bound to time, which never ends.
About the Author: Stephanie Mesler is an author of fiction, poetry, erotica, drama, preachery, teachery, ritual, and creative nonfiction. In previous lives, she has been an educator, reviewer, and columnist. Her most rewarding vocation is as mother to the precocious author, Su Mesler-Evans. Along the way, she has also served tables, changed diapers, treated bedsores, and sold light bulbs. She and her partner, a rocket scientist smart enough to know one cannot expect to decipher a poet, are residents of central Florida. Mesler's previous publications include Mother's Days, a full length play produced at Third Avenue Performance Space, Ranting Rosie and Blackie, invisible Woman, Jesus Christ on Locust Hill, and The Gnome in Grandfather's Garden. Her poems and stories have appeared in a variety of publications, including Skysong, For The Girls, Senior Gazette, and Columbus Monthly. Her web site is http: //apoetsprogrogress.blogspot.com/ Mesler was born in upstate New York and comes from long lines of Alleghenians on both sides. Alma Hill sits on the border between Pennsylvania and New York states. Her book, Soul Hill Lullabies, tells the story of Alma Hill and its people. Summer 2013, two more of Stephanie Mesler's books will be released: Ermengarde the Expansive, a fairytale for the rest of us, and Adventures and Confessions of a Fat Lady Who Sings, a memoir.
