About the Book

This book is a result of the Composer, Choreographer and Performer Collaboration Conference of Contemporary Music and Dance 2012 which was hosted by the Institute of Musical Research at the University of London. The theme of the conference, Sound, Music and the Moving-Thinking Body, had a global reach and attracted a high number of first-class international proposals addressing the meaning and significance of interdisciplinary relationships and collaborative processes involved in creating and performing new music and dance/movement. It has long been known that practicing musicians and dancers draw upon interdisciplinary relationships between sound and movement to inform their work and that many performance arts educators apply these relationships in working with aspiring composers, choreographers and performers. However, most material on the subject has been, to this point, relegated to single chapters in books and journal articles. Now, Sound, Music and the Moving-Thinking Body brings together the diverse topics researchers and practitioners across the sector are exploring, and raises issues concerning the collaborative aspects of creating and performing new work.
About the Author: Marilyn Wyers is a doctoral candidate in Music Performance Education at Goldsmiths, University of London, as well as an established pianist, dancer and teacher. Her research focuses on the use of movement imagery in piano performance practice, drawing upon approaches in phenomenology, movement theory and sound studies. She has recently performed at International College, Beirut; Chancellor's Hall, London; Caddebostan Cultural Centre, Istanbul; The Arches, Glasgow; Canada Water Cultural Space, London; and Goldsmiths, University of London. Marilyn is also Deputy Chief Examiner for the International Baccalaureate music programme. Osvaldo Glieca is a composer from Rome, Italy. He is a former Academic Assistant at the London College of Music and is currently a freelance arranger and orchestrator as well as a music licensing consultant for record labels and publishers in London. He was also an associate music acquisition researcher at the British Library Sound Archive until March 2013.
