En 1959, au cours d'un entretien, Jean-Claude Brisville demande à Albert Camus: Y a-t-il dans votre oeuvre un thème, selon vous important, que vous estimez négligé par vos commentateurs? . À quoi l'auteur répond: l'humour . Avec ces paroles l'écrivain ouvre une piste féconde aux chercheurs. Comment se fait-il qu'un auteur dont l'absurde sert de point de départ, ait dû signaler que les critiques n'avaient pas estimé à sa juste valeur l'aspect comique de son oeuvre? Le colloque d'Aix en Provence s'est donné pour tâche de remédier à cette carence en faisant ressortir et en ré-évaluant les aspects humoristiques de l'écriture camusienne. Par quels moyens l'auteur fait-il pressentir le sourire dans ses textes? Comment s'y prend-il pour le provoquer chez le lecteur, devenu miroir du visage hilare ou ironique? L'écriture recourt à une panoplie de techniques stylistiques selon le genre et le contexte: on parle alors de comédie, de satire ou de parodie, de plaisanterie, d'épigramme, de mot d'esprit... Le sourire peut-il être tragique autant que comique ? L'auteur de romans, de pièces de théâtre, d'essais philosophiques et lyriques, de reportages, d'éditoriaux et de lettres tant ouvertes qu'intimes, sait l'art de doser l'humour et la drôlerie par l'intermédiaire des mots, des gestes, des situations, de la perspective narrative. About the Author: Professeur émerite de l'université de Sheffield (Royaume-Uni), David Walker est l'auteur de "Outrage and Insight: Modern French Writers and the 'fait divers'" (1995) et de "Consumer Chronicles: Cultures of Consumption in Modern French Literature" (2011). Il a publié egalement de nombreuses études sur l'oeuvre d'André Gide aussi bien que sur celle de Camus. En plus de son édition scolaire de "L'Exil et le royaume" (1981), il a organisé le colloque de Keele dont les actes ont paru sous le titre "Albert Camus: les extrêmes et l'équilibre" (Rodopi, 1994), et a contribué à l'édition des "OEuvres complètes" de Camus dans la collection de la Pléiade (2006-2008). Plusieurs de ses publications les plus récentes portent sur le théâtre de Camus. Romancier, il est l'auteur de "Migrating Voids" (2014) et de "An Uncertain Shore" (2017).
